On Mondays at Hungry Dater, I usually like to focus on “meatless” (meaning mostly veggie or fruit focused but not always totally meatless) meals to start the week off right.

One of my new favorite things to add to both meat-centered and meatless meals are the products from Big Horn Oil Company here in Reno. These people are passionate about their products, how their made, and the authenticity of their flavors.

You may wonder how a store gets by selling only oils and vinegars. The answer is: There are so many more opportunities with oil and vinegar than any of us lay-people EVER thought possible! The flavors and infused scents of these different condiments will have you wanting to try and buy every one of their products and use them all the time (or maybe hoard them like I do…).

Generally, I don’t host Thanksgiving. But, as I’ve said, I love having turkey in the house at some point during the season. That means I usually make a turkey for myself (and the dog, if you count the “cookies” I give to her while carving).

Because it’s just Flower and me in the consumption of these annual turkeys, I have to find ways to use the leftover turkey as there’s generally no way I can eat a whole turkey’s worth of meat throughout a week by myself (though I’m sure Flower would love the opportunity to try).

Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Day 3 of 12 Days of Giveaways

Product Details So, when the 12 Days of Giveaways initially was set for December (before the website so conveniently decided to crash), Sunday night was going to be “family movie night,” and the movie was going to be A Christmas Story.

But now in light of the change in the season (bye Christmas!), a movie night will be much more satisfactory with a great, super-funny, not-only-for-chicks flick.

A friend of mine and I watch this movie together a lot. It started as our breakup movie. Nowadays it serves as our breakup, laugh-together, need-a-pick-me-up, reminder-of-impending-summer go-to.

What’s particularly funny about that is my friend (a semi-macho straight guy) is the one who started the tradition. If nothing else, you’ll get a couple hours of laughs out of it.

Saturdays on The Hungry Dater are usually geared toward party food and sweets.

There are not many things in this world better than chocolate. And artisan chocolates are truly one of my more favorite foodie indulgences. Dorinda’s Chocolates is a local artisan chocolatier that creates some of the most amazing chocolaty indulgences. My favorite: the dark chocolate caramel with sea salt. But really, I’ve never had anything I didn’t like there. Saturdays are a day for sweets and party food, so I’m giving away a box of Dorinda’s.

Here at The Hungry Dater we deal with two things that tend to go hand in hand: food and dating.

While I don’t agree with all the advice in the book, most of it is GOLD. It reminds women that we are the chase-ees not the chasers. Remembering we are the prizes and acting accordingly not only helps our self-image and self-worth, but it also strengthens the relationships we find ourselves in.

Secret Ingredient to the Best Hot Toddy Ever!

I went to a friend’s house the other night for an impromptu dinner, and we decided we wanted cocktails while we chatted. Of course, since we were talking shop, like a terrible guest I hadn’t brought anything for us to sip on. In addition, my friend and her husband had just moved, so they were low on mixers and such. What we did find in the cupboard was a bottle of Scotch. Neither of us is a huge Scotch drinker, so we discussed the different cocktails we might make with little in the way of mixers and a relatively un-explored type of alcohol. Long story short, we ended up sipping on glasses of Scotch on the rocks. But during the conversation, we discussed the newly-cold weather and how wonderful a Hot Toddy would taste next to the fire. Needless to say, when I went home I immediately made one.

It had been a couple of years since I’d had a Hot Toddy, and even longer since I’d made one. However, that discussion lit a craving in me usually reserved for cakes and chocolate. I went home that night, dug up a bottle of bourbon, a lemon, some organic honey, and the memories of the best Toddy I’d had in the last several years.

The best one I’ve had was from Chapel bar here in Reno, and at the time I was shocked I liked it.

I love to entertain. So naturally the holidays are some of my favorite times of year because it’s a wonderful excuse to make large meals for big groups of friends and family.

Because I love these meals, even if I’m not cooking for the actual holiday I almost always make the meals so I can fill my house with the smells, feelings, and, of course, the leftovers that come with hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas. This means I roast a turkey pretty much every year without fail.

I’ve worked really hard to figure out exactly how to roast the best turkey. I’ve taken classes, read blogs, Googled recipes, and asked friends and family. The one thing I consistently hear is how amazing brining a turkey is and how it helps the flavor and dryness of the turkey.

Clearly, I’ve made it my mission in life to explore the fundamental connection between food and relationships; but I’d be remiss if I didn’t note the connection that also inevitably happens between food and breakups. Watch any sitcom or romcom and inevitably at some point you’ll see some person eating comfort food (or drinking cocktails) to deal with a breakup. It’s a very real thing; and as inundated with food as my life is, I am no exception.

So, I hope that my writing here has portrayed me as an adventurous, open eater with a wide and exciting palate. However, it wasn’t always that way. And admittedly, I tend to revert when I’m sad, frustrated, or–God forbid–in the middle of a breakup.

I don’t know if it’s really conveyed here (I try really hard to hide it), but I’m not a vegetable eater. They just don’t do it for me. I’m sure I don’t get the daily recommended produce requirement barely ever, and those I do get are usually fruits. I’ve always been a “sweets” person, so I’m sure that’s a huge part of it.

But oddly, one way I will eat vegetables is as a soup. I’m not talking gazpacho. I’m sure someday I’ll end up eating my words and sharing with all of you some amaze-balls gazpacho recipe that changed my mind and my life, but for now, gazpacho seems a lot like drinking salsa to me. I don’t get it.

I know I’ve said it before, but I’m a seasonal drinker. It seems that whenever the month changes on the calendar, my palate changes with it.

November is my month for Old Fashioneds. I never used to consider myself a good “mixologist” or “cocktailer,” but about five years ago, I got so into Old Fashioneds, I figured I needed to learn to make them. Plus, when you make things yourself, you can make them perfectly to your taste every. single. time. For a foodie like myself, that’s truly a heavenly experience.
